WHY DOESN’T THE PROVINCE COUNT ALL LEARNERS IN OUR SCHOOLS?
3nd1

PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN AND
ADULT LEARNERS ARE PART OF
COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

MANY SCHOOLS ACROSS ONTARIO HAVE CHILD CARE AND PARENTING CENTRES, FOR PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN, AND CLASSES FOR ADULT LEARNERS. SCHOOLS ARE THE HUBS OF OUR COMMUNITIES.

Child care programs are often forced to pay unaffordable rents and permit charges – increasing parent fees and limiting community access to schools.

Adult learners are not counted in the provincial formula for determining school utilization rates. Tens of thousands of adults are not counted by the province: Adult ESL and literacy learners; high school students over 21; adults in general interest and seniors’ programs. As a result “under-utilized” schools are being closed.
